Mr Buthelezi was appointed as Managing Director of Genrec Engineering on 1 May 2018. Under his leadership, the business has settled well after its acquisition from Murray & Roberts Limited, and well on course to be a formidable player in the its main target areas: mining, rail stock, energy and construction. His operation “Asigoduki” and “Azibuye”, both initiatives aimed at retaining the maintenance sites that we inherited from the previous owner and winning the customers who had left Genrec, respectively have been a major stabilizing factor and are bearing fruit. To keep Genrec relevant and leading in the future, he has begun an initiative of replacing some of the old jobs that were shed with smart jobs by introducing robotics and preparing for automation.
Mr Buthelezi is an experienced business leader and advisor with a successful 24 years plus track record spanning industries and roles such as Advisory, FMCG, Tourism and Leisure, Construction, Engineering Management, Mergers and Acquisitions and – more recently – steel fabrication and site maintenance services. During his tenure in the group he has supported and led acquisitions whose combined value exceeds of R1 billion over a 3-year period since 2016.
Prior to this role, Mr Buthelezi held a number of senior leadership roles at Unilever, Sun International, WSP, KPMG, Transnet, and Gauteng Provincial Government, and in his own advisory firm which he was in charge of prior to joining the group.
Mr Buthelezi received his junior degree from the then University of Natal, and an LLM specialising in maritime law and economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, in Durban. After relocating to Johannesburg, he completed a Certificate Programme in Business Project Management (CPBPM, NQF Level 7) at Wits Business School and a Property Finance Programme at the University of Johannesburg. During his previous and first role within the group, Mr Buthelezi attended and completed the intensive Leadership in Corporate Counsel course at Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
